UniCloud: Top Use Cases

UniCloud addresses the leading cloud usage scenarios:

  • Cloud Clustering: With UniCloud, companies can provision an entire cluster in a public cloud environment (such as Amazon EC2) in support of project-based, large-scale computing, or to address occasional, temporary, project-based peak demands. In this case, the cluster user accesses the virtual cluster over the Internet. Normally the user will interact with a portal on the virtual front-end or to upload files to the cluster, or use ssh/scp and submit jobs to the cluster. The job results are then transferred back to the user’s local network.
  • Cloud Bursting: With UniCloud, internal cluster users who need additional capacity on demand can add virtual compute nodes by provisioning nodes in the public cloud and then connecting them to the customer network. In this use case, the local cluster connects to an external cloud service via a VPN tunnel. The UniCloud admin can grow and shrink the cluster as necessary and can automate management, setup, and tear down.
  • Private Cloud: UniCloud can create an internal virtual cluster that uses policies to place jobs on the most appropriate infrastructure. The UniCloud Private Cloud can live-migrate or checkpoint jobs, add virtual compute nodes by provisioning nodes in the public cloud then connecting them to the customer’s network, and can place jobs based on policies (example: power management).
