In planning, building and delivering a suite of cloud-based services, service providers need to take a phased approach to implementation. The diagram below displays the technology needs at each phase of deployment and names the Univa products that meet these key requirements.

Phase 1: Most service providers begin with a basic Utility Computing offering which requires infrastructure provisioning and resource management tools, virtual machine and physical machine management, and monitoring. This phase also requires a customer self-service portal so clients may interact with the service.

Phase 2: Moving beyond Utility Computing 1.0 means moving from usage-based pricing to SLA-based pricing. In this first stage of service level pricing, providers typically focus on infrastructure service levels based on metrics related to the infrastructure, not the applications.

Phase 3: Once infrastructure service levels are in place, service providers can move to true SaaS enablement by offering service level pricing based on application metrics. This stage requires a service governance software product such as Univa's Reliance that is capable of comprehending application, not just infrastructure, metrics and requirements.

Phase 4: With SLA-based pricing implement for both infrastructure and applications, service providers are ready to offer a mature suite of cloud-based products and services.
